The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different types available, it can be confusing for customers to make a choice between these technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a comparable rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your home over your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel works like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is absolutely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to create the projector image. A significant point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector works is vastly different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of making an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver top brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at any given time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this also lessens colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is able to produce. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this can seem to be an advantage, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all the colours are processed at the same time. DLP manufacturers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and they taught you how different colours of light refract differing amounts when projected through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will show above and a superfluous blue will come through below an image as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.

The sole veritable benefit (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant for portability and cannot be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is important to you, then the decision is easy. Choose an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely show bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections.

Taxes are categorized by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that places the same relative onus on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in relative levels. A progressive tax is characterized by a larger than proportional rise in the tax burden relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional increase in the comparative onus. Thus, progressive taxes are thought of as fighting inequalities in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes can have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, might become less so in the upper-income demographic—particularly if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by claiming deductions or by excluding some particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates which are applied to lower-income classes can also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given year does not necessarily come up with the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income might be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer could decide to pay for consumption by decreasing savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save those on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the spread of own income consumed or spent on a specific good decreases as the rate of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is difficult to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, due to the lack of certainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden is dependant essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In regarding the economic purposes of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those dictated in the legislation; commonly these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Hence, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates need to review provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for regarding incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may be reliant on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the fraction of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that fall as income grows.

The LCDs put in projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels lit by a bright arc lamp source. A line of lenses expands the reflected or transmitted image then casts it on the screen. In front-projection systems the LCD is located on the side of the screen as the viewer, although in rear-projection systems the screen is lit from behind. Projectors of greater expense and capability may be found with three distinct LCD panels, forming separate red, green, and blue images that come together to make a coloured picture on the screen.

The growth in demand for film presentations has put a growing emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has required the development of objects build with smectic liquid crystals, particular kinds of which give a faster electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is currently the most sophisticated smectic device. In it the liquid crystal molecules are set out in layers that are perpendicular to the substrate planes, which are separated by one or two micrometres, and throughout the layers the molecules are on a slant, as demonstrated in the figure. The host liquid crystal holds optically active molecules, and a slight result of the optical activity and the tilt of the molecules is the presence of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, analogous to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. The direction of this dipole is perpendicular to the tilt direction of the molecules and within the plane of the layers. Therefore, there must be a permanent charge separation across the liquid crystal layer in the SSFLC, and its sign is directly partnered to the tilt direction of the molecules. An applied voltage of the right sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and therefore reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The consequential change in optical properties can make a change from light to dark when one or more polarizers are employed.

SSFLC devices have been commercialized for large passive-matrix displays, but their expense and complexity has hindered them from creating any great progress on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, show some possibility for use as elements in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their fast reacting allows them to be made use of in time-sequential colour systems, in which expensive colour filters are emulated by a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pace (around 100 cycles every second). For example, the liquid crystal could be switched to a transmissive state during the red and green periods then to a nontransmissive state in the blue period, having the upshot that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

From each of the furniture needs, the chair may be primary. While many other pieces (apart from the bed) are designed to support objects, the chair supports a human form. The term chair is said here in the most general sense, from stool to throne to derivative forms like the bench or sofa, which should be regarded as extended or connected chairs, and whose character (i.e., whether they are intended for sitting or reclining) is not overtly distinguished.

The social history of the chair is as curious as its history as a creative craft. The chair is not only a physical support and aesthetic piece; it is also symbolic of social status. From the old royal courts there were clear signifiers between being seated on a chair with arms, sitting on a chair with a back but no arms, or having to make do with a stool. During the recent century, the director’s and manager’s chair has developed an identifier of superior standing, and even in democratic government debate the speaker sits on a raised level.

As its furniture construction, the chair can be used for a wealth of various forms. There are chairs structured to match man’s age and physical capabilities (the high chair, the wheelchair) and to show his rank in society (the executive chair, the throne). Since past times there were chairs for birthing (birth chairs); since the 20th century, there have been chairs to die in (the electric chair). There are chairs with one, two, three, or four legs, chairs with or without arms, and chairs with or without backs. We can make chairs that can be folded for easy storage, chairs on wheels, and chairs on runners.

Our modern lifestyle has developed new chairs for automobiles and aircraft. All of these chair forms have adapted to conform to evolving human uses. For its unique importance with man, the chair exists to its full importance only when being utilised. Though it makes no difference to one’s appreciation of a cupboard or a bureau whether there is anything inside or not, a chair is seen best and judged best with a person utilising it, because chair and sitter require the other. Thus the individual areas of a chair have been labeled as the parts of the human shape: arms, legs, feet, back, and seat.

Because the primary function of your chair is to support the body, its value is judged firstly from how completely it does fulfill this practical function. In the construction of a chair, the maker is limited under the static regulation and principal measurements. Through these regulations, however, the chair builder has great freedom.

The history of the chair covers a period of several thousand years. There are peoples that had significant chair shapes, as expressions of the topmost endeavour in the arenas of skill and creativity. From these cultures, special mention must be made of ancient Egypt and Greece; China; Spain and The Netherlands in the 17th century; England in the 18th century; and France in the 18th century during the lives of Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Egypt
Two ancient Egyptian chair forms, both the structures of expert craft, are now seen from tomb discoveries. The first one of the two is a four-legged chair with a back, the other a folding stool. The typical Egyptian chair would have four legs designed as akin to those of an animal, a curved seat, and leading to a sloping back supported from vertical stretchers. From this design a strong triangular structure was made. There was from our view no significant differentiation from the creation of Egyptian thrones and chairs for common peasantry. The real variation exists in the complexity of ornamentation, in the particulars of costly inlays. The Egyptian folding stool in all probability was made to be an easily stored seat for army soldiers. As a camp stool that form existed until much later points. But the stool also then was designed as the character of a ceremonial seat, its technical role as a folding stool being forgotten. This can from today’s evidence be observed, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, executed in ebony with ivory inlay work and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They are constructed in the construction of folding stools but aren’t able to be folded because the seats were formed from wood. The easy manufacture of the folding stool, being of two frames that spin on metal bolts and have a seat of leather or fabric fastened between them, then appeared at some time later as the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The most recognised of this form is the folding stool, crafted out of ashwood, which can now be found at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).

Greece and Rome
The typical Greek chair, the klismos, is found not from any ancient specimen still in form but seen in a variety of pictorial evidence. The most recognisable is the klismos drawn on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial place by Athens (c. 410 BC). This is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, only two of which are visible. These unique legs were understood to have been manufactured with bent wood and were therefore needed to bear extreme pressure from the weight of the sitter. The joints attaching the legs to the frame of the seat are therefore extremely stable and were visibly indicated.

The Romans emulated the Greek style; evidence of models of seated Romans are designs of a denser and apparently kind of more crudely crafted klismos. Both styles, light or heavy, were seen again in the Classicist epoch. The klismos style is known in French Empire furniture, in English Regency, and in some special types of profound originality within Denmark and Sweden around 1800.

China
The progression of the chair in China can not be tracked as far back as chairs in Egypt and Greece. Since the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an unscathed serial of sketches and artworks was preserved, showing the interiors and exteriors of Chinese buildings and the furniture. Another preservation from the 16th century are a number of chairs crafted from wood or lacquered wood, that possess an amazing likeness to representations of previous chairs.

Just as in Egypt, there were two fundamental chair forms in China: a chair having four legs and a folding stool. The four-legged chair is seen both with or without arms though never missing the square seat and straight stiles (upright side supports) to support the back. In one style, it has been found, the stiles are delicately curved by the arms in order to sit right with the form of the S-shaped back splat (the main upright of a chairback). Each of the three sections were mortised onto the yoke-like top rail. Although the innovation of this back splat later had an introduction for English chairs from the Queen Anne period, wooden sections that just to a particular extent stabilise corner joints (and furthermore were loose into the bargain) are a signature solely to Chinese chairs. The four legs pass through the seat frame, which ends upon the rounded staves. Each member is round in section or is given rounded edges—acknowledging as may be to the bamboo tradition. The seat is not pleasant and may have had a plaited seat. These chairs required the sitter to remain stiff and upright; when too much pressure is exerted on the back, the chair has a way of toppling over. In patriarchal Chinese houses of this period armchairs likely were reserved for elderly individuals in the family, for they were esteemed greatly.

The Chinese folding stool is presumed to have travelled to China from the West. It does not vary that much from the Egyptian or Scandinavian folding stools, but it has a dissimilarity in that the top rail is delicately affixed to the two legs of the stool by a curved member, which is generally provided with metal mounts. From a Western perspective the overall effect of both these furniture designs is stylized. The constructive and decorative aspects are combined in a manner that is at the same time naïve and refined. The pieced-together appearance is a result of the fact that the individual items do not appear to have been held together by either glue or screws, but are mortised on one another and held in place in the manner of a Chinese puzzle.

Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain in the 17th century also left its name on the chair. Works of art display a design of chair with a relatively crude wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, with two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing in between the layers, stitched to bring out a pattern of tiny pads. The front board and a related board from the back could be folded after unscrewing some tiny iron hooks. In this way the chair was a readily portable piece of furniture while traveling which, at the same period, gave the status of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.

The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered kind of chair can be found in engravings of the inside of affluent Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, as well as in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. Though this kind of chair might also be made in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won critical acclaim, it is not certain that the form actually originated in The Netherlands. Typically, the legs of the chair will be smooth, round in section, and of slim measurements; they are sometimes baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is clearly a bourgeois piece of furniture and was manufactured in vast numbers, as indicated from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which a whole row of such chairs lined up by a wall. The design asserts itself with its shapely proportions and expensive upholstery in gilt leather or fabric edged with fringes.

France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature of forms—that is to say, as created in Paris around 1750—spread over most of Europe and has been imitated or copied during the mid-20th century. The style owes this popularity to a combination of comfort and charm. The seat suits to the human body and allows a relaxed sitting position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Generally the seat and back are upholstered, and there are little upholstered pads covering the armrests. Smooth transitions are achieved between seat frame, legs, and back disguise all the joints, which are constructed solidly on craftsmanlike methods despite the absence of stretchers between the legs.

French Rococo chairs and imitations thereof use wood of relatively thick measurements; but each member is deeply molded, all extra wood has been cut away, and more upmarket designs may be further embellished with special delicate and decorative carving. The wood could be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry may be used for all of the upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; canework is occasionally used instead of upholstery.

English chairs from the 18th century were more open in design than the French. The French touch for stylistic uniformity, which lead from the royal circles in Paris and Versailles through most of France and won favour in several parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).

Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became popularised and was widely distributed throughout the world.

Late 18th to 20th century
In the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.

In cheaper products of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.

Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, purport that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

Bookkeeping is the charting of the money values of the operation of a business. Bookkeeping creates the figures from which accounts are drafted but is a previous process, preliminary to accounting.

Basically, bookkeeping grants two areas of information: (1) the current value, or equity, of an entity and (2) the change in value—profit or loss—taking placement in the entity during a particular time.

Management officials, investors, and credit grantors all demand such information: management in order to assess the upshots of operations, to control costs, to budget for the future, and to make financial policy decisions; investors to understand the outcome of business operations and make decisions about buying, holding, and selling securities; and credit grantors to analyze the financial statements of a business in assessing whether to grant a loan.

Bits and pieces of financial and numerical records can be uncovered for just about every country with a commercial backbone. Records of trading contracts have been uncovered in the archaelogical digs of Babylon, and accounts for both farms and estates were held in ancient Greece and Rome. The double-entry manner of bookkeeping started with the progression of the entrepeneurial republics of Italy, and instruction manuals for bookkeeping were developed during the 15th century in several Italian cities.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution permitted an important stimulus to accounting and bookkeeping.

The progression of manufacturing, trading, shipping, and subsidiary services made correct financial bookkeeping a requirement. The ancestry of bookkeeping, in fact, reflects closely the history of commerce, industry, and government and, in part, assisted to form it. The worldwide movement of industrial and commercial activity demanded higher sophisticate decision-making methodology, which in its turn required higher sophistication in the selection, classification, and presentation of information, even more so with the aid of computers. Taxation and government legislation became more detailed and resulted in higher demand for information; firms had to show information to go with their income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, and other tax reports. Governmental agencies and educational and other nonprofit institutions also developed in size, and the need for bookkeeping for their own inner operations went up.

While bookkeeping processes can be rather detailed, all are based on two types of books employed in the bookkeeping procedure—journals and ledgers. A journal must have the daily transactions (sales, purchases, and so forth), and the ledger contains the records of individual accounts. The daily records kept in the journals are written in the ledgers.

At the end of every month, as a general rule, an income statement and a balance sheet are made from the trial balance posted in the ledger. The point of the income statement or profit-and-loss statement is to present an analysis of those changes that have taken place in the entity equity as a result of the operations of the period. The balance sheet provides the financial situation of the enterprise at the particular day regarding assets, liabilities, and the ownership equity.

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.

Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.

Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.

But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).

During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.

North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.

The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields yielded an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.

Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.

Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful trend to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.

New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.

Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed. Their task is eased by the presence of special surveillance, early-warning, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, with enormous radars and sophisticated command and control systems to manage all a nation’s defences in the most efficient way.

There is no better feeling than being in the cockpit during your jet fighter flight. Jet fighter flights and jet fighter joy flights are the ultimate gift giving and receiving experience that will be remembered forever.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or photorejuvenation therapy is a light based technology which treats several skin conditions in one treatment.

It works in the deeper layers of the skin where traditional skincare cannot reach, thus achieving a far superior result in a shorter time frame.

Skin concerns such as pigmentation, freckling, sun damage, capillaries, redness, acne scarring and rosacea may be treated with photorejuvenation.

Pulses of light are applied to the skin either in single zone or more commonly over the whole area to provide a uniform result.

The treatments remove most types of sun induced pigmentation like freckling, age spots and sun damage. By lessening the darker pigmentation IPL leaves the skin with a more even tone.

Vascular skin concerns including capillaries, redness, acne scarring and rosacea are also targeted by the broad wavelengths of light.

As most people will have several skin concerns, this treatment has become popular as it can address them all. The IPL photorejuvenation also stimulates the production of collagen which will plump and smooth the texture of the skin, improving fine lines, wrinkles and pitted scarring.

The most common treatment areas are face, neck, décolletage/chest area and backs of hands.

There is little or no downtime involved with photorejuvenation. Most people will experience some redness and heat in the area which subsides in several hours after treatment.

The darker areas of pigment may form tiny ‘pigment crusts’ which lift off in a few days revealing the result underneath. As the skin is not broken or damaged it is fine to wear make-up, though exfoliation via mechanical scrubs and AHA/glycolics is to be avoided for a week after the IPL treatment.

IPL Photorejuvenation treatments can be utilised as a once off treatment, however a course of treatments will promote the best results.

A progressive result can be expected with a change usually noticed within a week after a session. It is of utmost importance to wear sunscreen in between and after treatments as most of the damage on skin is caused by UV exposure and to prolong the result from the IPL photorejuvenation this is essential.
